Any true A.A.'er will probably tell you that one of the biggest accomplishments in any alcoholics recovery is reaching that "One Year Milestone". They call it your "Birthday"...and rightfully so. You were, in a sense, "born" on the day you took your last drink, set the bottle down and started your journey toward a life of sobriety.
September 5th IS that day for me.
I drank my last alcoholic drink 366 VERY LONG days ago (yes, it was a leap year, I had to endure one more day than 75% of other alcoholics). The journey has been a struggle, long and introspective...and it will never truly end.
The fight continues. Though it's not so much a "fight" anymore as it is an understanding. A deeper understanding of myself and the world around me. Finally realizing that some things are just simply BIGGER than me...and that try as I may, I will never win.
With some things the only way to win the game is to never play in the first place. Don't even sit down at the table, because it's not a matter of if or when, you WILL lose.
